Current Economic and Financial Conditions in the Global Economy
A November 15, 2011 event hosted by Tepper School Pittsburgh Alumni Chapter featured a panel of faculty talking about current economic and financial conditions in the global economy.
Now top executives for Black Rock and Kelly Services, onetime classmates Ann Marie Petach and Patricia Little (both MSIA ’84) reflected on the most important network of all – friendship – as they spoke to MBA students as part of the W.L. Mellon Speaker Series. Petach and Little met in the first few days of their MBA education and have maintained their friendship for more than 30 years.
DeLyle Bloomquist, president of Global Chemical Business at Tata Chemicals Ltd., described how he rose through the ranks of the chemical industry through hard work and by taking on “the bad and the ugly” jobs that everyone else shunned. He told students at the Tepper School of Business to make decisions rather than over-analyzing issues.
New Model for Higher Education Created Through Organizational Learning Contracts
A new and innovative solution to effective teaching and learning in higher education is the focus of a new book titled “Organizational Learning Contracts: New and Traditional Colleges,” authored by Paul S. Goodman, the Richard M. Cyert Professor of Organizational Psychology and Director of the Institute for Strategic Development.
Oliver Williamson, Carnegie Mellon University - Graduate School of Industrial Administration (now the Tepper School of Business) Ph.D. '63, and 2009 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, presented the keynote speech to masters and doctoral graduates on May 14, 2011. He’s a legend in Silicon Valley. Ray Lane, the former president of Oracle Corp., is now managing partner of the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer. Lane advised Tepper School of Business students on how to get funding for a startup.
Japan Trekkers Experience Quake And Resolve To Help
A group of students from the Tepper School of Business were in Tokyo when the massive earthquake struck Japan's northeastern coast. Led by Daisuke Tanaka (MBA '12), Hiroshi Higuchi (MBA '12) and Aki Shiraishi, the students had set aside their Spring Break to visit several Japanese cities, experience Japanese culture and make several corporate visits. But the students returned from their trip with more than just memories. They returned with a renewed sense of just how fragile life is — and a strong desire to help victims of the devastation.

Candace S. Matthews, a native of western Pennsylvania’s steel country, studied metallurgical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Then the steel industry collapsed. She became a marketer, working for megabrands at Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble and L’OREAL. Today the chief marketing officer for Amway is helping create a global brand for the company.
